Keep reading:9 of the best dressing tables that will turn any bedroom into a boudoir

At the risk of being unlucky for seven years, or at least sweeping up a lot of shards of glass, we began to prepare ourselves in front of a series of make-up mirrors to select the best one.

  • Top 10 wall mirrors
  • 9 best nightstands that have room for all your nighttime essentials
  • The 10 Best Sewing Machines That Are Beginner Friendly

The designs below were judged on clarity, versatility (ie multiple magnification or dual function), ease of use, and whether they offered additional features such as storage or lighting.

Our selection includes everything from compact designs to larger, more traditional vanity mirrors suitable for a boudoir.

You can trust our independent reviews. We may receive commissions from some retailers, but we never allow this to affect the selection formed from real testing and expert advice. This revenue helps us fund The Independent's journalism.

Dormy House's Bruton Mirror

The simple styling of this vanity mirror makes it a good choice for a more traditional or modern setting. Even better, you can choose one of ten different painted colors for the frame, or opt for an unfinished frame and paint it to match your decor. Our pattern came in Smooth Seixo, a beautiful neutral tone, and arrived assembled. INCREDIBLY CONVENIENT - You can view your profile from all angles with the triple aspect, rotate the center panel forward or backward (the hinge keeps it in place), or remove the center mirror when you need it for something else.

The mirrored side panels allow it to be a standalone piece on your vanity, so no assembly or fastening is required. We like the details on this product - each mirror piece has a beveled edge, giving it a classic feel, while the frame behind is accessible, meaning the worst case scenario is that the glass can be replaced. The frame itself is made of smooth MDF and feels durable, heavy and solid. Price-wise, it's excellent value for money for a piece of furniture that's sure to stay on your dressing table for years to come.

EKO iMira mini magnifying mirror

As good as your vanity mirror at home, mirrors at the hotel or on the go probably won't be, so fixing makeup or hair on the go is a challenge - and that's where this freestanding mini mirror comes in. from its travel holder so you can easily pack it in a shoulder bag or suitcase, and its built-in LED light charges via USB so you don't have to look for an outlet to use it or have a tow cable. It's also rich in other features - the stand doubles as a shelf for trinkets and jewelry, while its light has three brightness settings.

The mirror itself has 5x magnification - meaning you can perfect your eyeliner or, like us, obsess over every visible pore and crease - and it tilts 55 degrees, allowing us to find just the right angle. Unfortunately, there's not much of a difference between medium brightness and maximum brightness, and it takes practice to get the right touch pressure to switch between settings. Too strong and the light goes off, too soft and you're not sure you've changed the brightness until you tap again. Still, it's an excellent balance of everything you could want in a smaller mirror - quick to load, portable, well-lit and affordably priced.

simplehuman Sensor-Spiegel-Trio

If your idea of fun is spending the night with your phone off the hook while you examine every inch of your facial skin, this mirror is for you. No blackhead or enlarged pore is safe from its handy trio of rotating mirrors - one side has 5x magnification for a general exam, while the other combines a 1x mirror for normal viewing with a 10x section so you can really get in. in detail.

What's special, however, is the ring of lighting around the edge. It has an optional motion sensor, so the light turns on with a wave or when you point your face at it. You can also switch between warm and cool light and vary the brightness with one tap.

We found this to be one of our favorite mirrors - it was easy to use with clear instructions, easy to plug in as there's the option to charge via USB or adapter, and the mirrors offer amazing clarity. It's a good size too - not too big, so it takes up a lot of space, but still with a 20 cm (8 inch) mirror width. We also like the option of slick metallic finishes — our sample was rose gold, which looked stunning in the spot. The only downside is that the price is equivalent to several trips to the salon.

Redcandy table mirror with golden hands

What this unusual mirror lacks in a mirror finish, it makes up for in whimsical charm. The rounded section is surrounded by two golden wire hands that hold the mirror, which then expands into a small stand to allow it to stand upright on a table without wobble.

Its short, compact size also means you can place it on a shelf if you don't have space on a vanity or table. It's light enough to pick up and hold in one hand if you're a master of a one-handed makeover.

The mirror itself is pretty standard - there are no extra lights or features here. What it does offer is a good spot for some jewelry - your fingers are good for hanging rings or bracelets so they don't get damaged or tangled. Essentially, this means that the gold hand mirror might not work as well as the main mirror, but it would be great as an extra.

Wayfair Eells makeup mirror

For the price you'd think, the eells makeup mirror would be bigger than it is - it's only 30 cm high and 20 cm wide. On a dressing table it would probably need to be elevated for everyday use as there is no way to tilt it. However, the compact size stands out when your desk is full of bottles and makeup, especially since it has a built-in case ideal for storing nail polish, lipsticks, earrings and makeup brushes. The base of the glass-framed caddy is also mirrored, adding an extra touch of glamor to your jewelry.

Eells is freestanding and quite light - too bad it doesn't have hooks on the back as it would look great hanging on the wall. Another eye-catching feature is the vaulted top and slim brass frame that complement most decor styles well. A pretty choice rather than a practical one, again this would be better as an extra vanity mirror rather than an everyday companion.

Dunelm baroque makeup mirror

The Baroque Mirror of Dunelm was the only one we had to assemble and it was no easy task. While most screws went in quickly, attaching the brackets to the bracket required an Allen key and was the most time-consuming and frustrating task of the assembly. The estimated time in the instructions was 30 minutes and, thanks to all the resistance of the Allen key, it ended up working. Given the mirror's simple design, it's hard to imagine why it isn't finished, or at least partially.

But the effort is worth it - Baroque is both elegant and solid furniture. It is made of MDF and pine, with a wide and robust base, hinges that allow the mirror to be removed for other tasks and the possibility of tilting it forwards or backwards. Our standard comes in black, although it is also available painted white or gray to suit any space. Great value for money, but one to avoid if you prefer your products to be ready to use right out of the box.

The White Company dressing table mirror

As with many offerings from The White Company, the beauty of this vanity mirror lies in its simple elegance. Composed of a rectangular section of glass in a generous frame, the hinge pivots at just the right angle while the base keeps it firmly placed on the table top.

Of all the freestanding mirrors we tested, this one was the heaviest by far, weighing in at 4.5kg - great if you tend to drop things while picking up a hairbrush. We also like the large mirror area, which lets you apply makeup without fidgeting too much.

As the price suggests, the frame and base aren't just silver, they're silver plated and finished with a clear coat to prevent tarnishing. Not only does this give the frame a rich yet smooth shine, it also means it will look great for years to come. The only downside is that fingerprints are visible on the base and bezel, so you might leave a smudge or two when adjusting. We found that the best way to change the angle was to push the mirror out of the velvety bottom.

Seletti mirror shaped poker cards

What better inspiration for a vanity mirror than a perfectly manicured hand? Seletti's wall mirror combines a vintage vibe with a generous glass surface that is both wide (72 cm) and tall (68 cm) - ideal for trying a voluminous blow-dry or a new hairstyle. It's well designed to hang - the glass isn't too heavy, and there's a multi-ribbed panel on the back for easy mounting. The printed design also does not cover the main surface of the glass and is relatively unobtrusive.

The fact that the mirror is wall-mounted means it's less suited to close-ups, especially when you have to lean over a table to see details. It's also on the expensive side. However, if your dressing table is cluttered with products or is rather narrow, a wall mirror like this one is a great choice - it's stylish without being bulky and the perfect dimensions for a compact to medium bedroom.

Next Harlow makeup mirror

The most affordable mirror in our roundup, the Harlow brings a lot to the (vanity) table. An updated version of a bathroom classic, this large circular swivel mirror combines an x1 side with an x3 side so you can easily switch between regular and magnifying lenses. It also rotates using the buttons on each side, so you don't have to touch the frame or glass and leave fingerprints.

The design is robust and well-executed - the approximately 24 cm diameter mirrors are surrounded by a chrome frame on a matching stand with subtle accents. There's a soft base underneath so it won't scratch your vanity top, and the whole thing is very light and easy to carry around so you can pop it in the bathroom when needed. While the magnification can be a little blurry around the edges and isn't quite as loud as others - you won't see every single eyebrow hair, for example - if all you're looking for is something to help you get more precision. up application, it is a budget purchase.

The verdict: make-up mirror

ChoiceThe Mirror of House DormyAs our best buy it was an easy choice as we felt it was a good balance of price, size and versatility. For those on a limited budget,Next comes Harlowit's one of the best affordable options we've seen, plus I was really impressedSimplehuman's high-tech sensor mirror.
